Murano
“the island of artistic glassmaking in Venice, since 1295”
Murano, an island in the Venetian Lagoon, is renowned worldwide for the extraordinary craftsmanship of its master glassmakers, who create exquisite blown glass artworks and employ glass manufacturing techniques that have been passed down through generations
Murano and its contrasts
Murano fascinates with its enchanted atmosphere, characterized by picturesque canals, palaces, historic residences, and ancient furnaces where renowned blown glass masterpieces are made
Amidst its canals and romantic views full of history, there is a magical air. Murano is a perfect contrast of colors and elements: water contrasts with the fire of the glass furnaces, and the pastel colors of the ancient houses alternate with the bright colors of the blown glass. Designers and master glassmakers at 1295-Murano are inspired by this unique environment
Murano glass
A timeless art
The Venetian art of glassmaking has ancient origins and draws on Roman and Byzantine knowledge.
Around 1291, the doge of the Venetian Republic had decided to move all the furnaces that had previously been in Venice to a small fishing island called Murano to prevent fires in the city’s buildings, most of which were built of wood. This was not only for safety reasons, but also to better protect the secrets of glassmaking and a centuries-old tradition.
Having moved the furnaces and glassmaking to Murano brought with it another benefit: the concentration and proximity of the craftsmen on the island made it easier to exchange ideas and perfect processing techniques, so much so that in just a few years, Murano became the glassmaking center of Europe.
Furnaces began to develop that produced Murano glass objects with modern designs, the same ones we find today, without losing the uniqueness and artistic essence of a strong tradition that has been able to innovate over the centuries.
